As the holiday season approaches, fleet managers operating light- and medium-duty trucks and vans face a significant rise in cargo theft. Jeff Martin, vice president of global sales strategy at Lytx, explains why theft spikes during this time and what proactive steps fleet managers can take to protect their vehicles, cargo, and drivers.

The holiday season is a busy time for fleets, which unfortunately means it’s also a prime time for thieves. According to Martin, several factors contribute to the uptick in theft. 

“General economic hardships, issues like drug abuse, and organized crime all play a role. During the holiday season, the risk intensifies due to the higher volume of deliveries and extended operating hours, which increase exposure,” he said.

Martin highlighted that not only is there more cargo in transit, but the rush to fulfill orders can lead to lapses in security. 

“Increased holiday traffic creates parking challenges,” he noted, “This increased traffic can limit the effectiveness of outdoor cameras and oversight. The more time trucks spend on the road or parked in unsecured areas, the greater the opportunity for theft.”

The Role of Telematics and AI in Theft Prevention

While the challenges are real, technology offers a strong line of defense against theft. Martin emphasized that telematics and AI-based solutions are key tools for fleet managers, especially during high-risk periods like the holiday season.

“Video safety and telematics systems provide valuable insights for protecting both employees and the cargo,” he explained. “Most thieves will avoid being recorded, so installing interior dash cams, as well as side and rear cameras, acts as a strong deterrent. This alone can reduce the risk by discouraging criminal activity from the outset.”

In addition to video safety, Martin highlighted how telematics plays a crucial role in protecting fleets: “Fleet tracking provides not only real-time location monitoring but also helps with the recovery process if a truck is stolen. Having access to this kind of data can make all the difference in responding to a theft quickly and efficiently.”

Beyond real-time tracking, Martin advised fleet managers to evaluate their idle policies. 

“Carefully managing idle time helps prevent unnecessary truck theft,” he added. “A well-managed idle policy reduces the risk of trucks being stolen when they’re left unattended.”

Common Vulnerabilities and Best Practices

During the holiday season, cargo theft tends to target fleet operations' most vulnerable aspects, and thieves are often quick and calculated. 

“The most common targets are cargo, tools, and personal items,” Martin shared. “These thefts can happen in under a minute, typically involving one or more individuals who are experienced in identifying their targets and acting swiftly.”

To protect against these vulnerabilities, Martin recommended several best practices:

1. Evaluate Parking Locations: “Drivers should park in high-traffic areas with good visibility and near security cameras whenever possible,” he said. “Parking in a well-lit area or near public cameras can help deter thieves.”

2. Work with Property Managers: In locations where parking may be risky, Martin advised fleet managers to coordinate with property managers. “Discussing safe parking locations with management can help drivers find areas with a lower risk of theft,” he explained.

3. Cargo and Vehicle Securement: “Drivers should ensure vehicles are always locked, and cargo should be secured whenever possible,” Martin stressed. Simple steps like locking doors and parking in visible areas can make a big difference.

How Large Fleets are Protecting Their Assets and What Smaller Operators Can Learn

Large retailers, such as Walmart and Amazon, have led the way in using technology to safeguard their fleets, and smaller fleet operators can learn a lot from their approach. Martin pointed out that while big companies have more resources, many of the same tools are available to smaller fleets.

“Larger fleets often implement strict idle policies and use video safety and telematics to monitor their operations,” he added. “These technologies help protect cargo and vehicles when parked in areas with good visibility or camera coverage.”

However, smaller fleets can still take advantage of these solutions. “Even independent contractors or small fleet operators can benefit from using telematics and video safety systems to monitor their trucks and drivers in real-time,” Martin said. “It’s all about leveraging the available technology to ensure that your fleet is protected.”

Training and Awareness: The First Line of Defense

One of the most important things fleet managers can do to prevent theft is to train their drivers and employees to be aware of the risks. 

“The best advice is to implement an awareness campaign and training program that prioritizes employee safety,” Martin advised. “This training should cover personal protection, cargo securement, and vehicle security.”

In addition to foundational training, Martin recommended running seasonal awareness campaigns and reinforcing security measures through dispatch messaging. 

“Regular communication between drivers, technicians, and management is critical,” he explained. “It’s also important to use technology to support your team. Video safety and telematics systems help frontline employees execute security procedures more effectively.”

Taking Proactive Steps Now

As the holiday season approaches, Martin encouraged truck fleet managers to take proactive steps to mitigate the risks of theft. 

“New hire onboarding training, annual training, and seasonal awareness campaigns are invaluable,” he said. “On top of that, fleet managers should standardize idle and vehicle securement policies whenever possible.”

Martin suggested video safety cameras and fleet tracking systems for fleets looking to invest in technology. 

“These systems not only act as a deterrent but also increase the chances of recovering stolen assets,” he noted. Real-time monitoring and recording provide crucial data that can aid law enforcement in tracking down stolen vehicles and cargo.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Fleet Security

As technology continues to advance, Martin sees AI and machine learning playing a major role in shaping the future of fleet security. 

“AI will allow real-time monitoring and pattern analysis, helping fleets react more quickly to security threats — or even prevent them before they happen,” he predicted.

AI-driven systems will also enhance vehicle tracking, driver behavior analysis, and anomaly detection, leading to faster and more accurate responses to potential risks. 

“As we move forward, AI-powered cybersecurity will be essential in defending connected fleet systems against hacking attempts,” Martin concluded.

By staying proactive and leveraging the latest technology, fleet managers can safeguard their vehicles, cargo, and drivers during the busy holiday season and beyond.
