Fleet managers today are faced with increasingly sophisticated threats, as cargo theft continues to escalate across the industry. The need for rigorous security audits, risk assessments, and proactive theft prevention strategies is more critical than ever.

Industry experts discuss the frequency of these security measures with Work Truck and share insights on using advanced technology to stay ahead of potential threats.

The Importance of Regular Security Audits and Risk Assessments

Industry leaders agree that regular security audits and risk assessments are fundamental to fleet protection.

“There’s that adage, ‘You can’t manage what you can’t measure.’ I advise organizations to conduct security audits and risk assessments quarterly, at the least. Depending on their cargo value and routes, more frequent assessments may be necessary,” said Bek Abdullayev, CEO at Super Dispatch.

He emphasized these evaluations help fleet managers identify vulnerabilities and adapt to new threats promptly.

Similarly, Ron Cordova, director of safety and compliance at Zonar, stressed the importance of staying vigilant.

“As much as cargo theft is increasing and changing over time, fleet managers should conduct security and risk assessments quarterly to identify the weak links and adjust their operations moving forward,” he said.

However, the frequency of audits may vary based on different factors.

“The type of cargo being moved, geography, and economic conditions all play a role in determining how often assessments should be conducted,” noted Robert Donoho, director of channel sales at EROAD.

He added that telematics technology, GPS tracking, and driver behavior monitoring are invaluable tools in understanding and mitigating risks.

Solutions to Simplify and Strengthen Security Efforts

Fleet managers looking to improve their security practices increasingly use integrated technological solutions that streamline audits and consolidate data.

Eric Frey, director, global product management at Powerfleet, highlighted the importance of automating and simplifying processes.

“Incorporating risk assessments and security audits into Health and Safety programs makes it part of a company’s culture,” he said. “At Powerfleet, our mission is to automate and consolidate data from many disconnected sources into a single pane of glass, which can transform business decisions and processes.”

Remaining Proactive About Security Measures

Proactivity is key to preventing theft.

“Fleet managers will want to keep fraud top of mind, all the time. Encouraging employees to watch for vulnerabilities and report red flags gives businesses the chance to address potential threats before they escalate,” said Abdullayev of Super Dispatch.

Platforms like Super Dispatch provide tools that keep users engaged, increasing overall security awareness.

Cordova of Zonar echoed the importance of proactive measures, stating that investing time in pre- and post-trip inspections can have a life-saving impact.

“Fifteen minutes spent ensuring the maintenance and security of assets can make a huge difference in keeping cargo secure,” he advised.

Cybersecurity is also an area fleet managers should not overlook, according to Jane Jazrawy, CEO of CarriersEdge. She warned that online scams and fraud could compromise cargo security and advised managers to be vigilant about potential cyber threats.

"As criminals are using technology to commit theft, being aware of how scams work online can help both fleet managers and drivers identify when something just isn’t right," Jazrawy explained.

An easy step to take?

“Don’t let a van go on the road without cargo locks and an alarm system. Leaving a vehicle for one day without full protection could mean thousands of dollars in theft,” said Brendan Church, chief marketing officer for Legend Fleet.

Advanced Security Tools to Strengthen Fleets

Advanced security technologies like telematics, GPS tracking, and dashcams are critical tools that fleet managers should consider.

Frey of Powerfleet recommends a mix of basic and advanced tools: “Installing warning devices like steering wheel locks, aftermarket alarms, and immobilizing devices can deter theft, while GPS tracking systems aid in quick asset recovery.”

Additionally, Frey emphasized the benefits of AI-powered dash cameras, which proactively monitor security incidents, establish geofencing, and detect tampering in real-time. These tools deter theft and provide real-time data that fleet managers can use to enhance operational efficiency and safety.

Advice for Fleet Managers New to Cargo Theft Prevention

Experts recommend starting with the basics for fleet managers just beginning to implement theft prevention strategies.

“Consult the experts, audit your operations for weak points, and focus on the basics—driver training on the tell-tale signs of cargo theft and suspicious activity so they stay vigilant,” advised Cordova of Zonar.

From there, fleets can gradually integrate technology to monitor vehicles and assets, keeping pace with evolving theft tactics.

More advanced strategies might involve collaborating with industry peers, utilizing AI-powered dashcams for real-time security monitoring, and implementing geofencing to create virtual boundaries around high-risk areas.

“Continued training and appointing a fleet security officer further reinforce security protocols, ensuring comprehensive protection of fleet assets,” said Frey of Powerfleet.

In an industry where the stakes are high, and the threats are evolving, a mix of vigilance, regular assessments, and cutting-edge technology will help fleet managers stay ahead of cargo theft.
