In recent years, technology has transformed the way work truck fleets operate.

With the advancement of telematics, sensors, and other data collection tools, fleet managers now have greater visibility into the performance of their vehicles and the behavior of their drivers.

Top 5 Tech News

1. Advancements in LED Vehicle Lighting — Recent advancements in LED lighting help increase driver and job site visibility. the future of on-vehicle lighting is moving beyond the concept of one light/one function and beginning to shift towards the development of new multi-function LED lighting options.

2. Data-as-a-service (DaaS) technology — By analyzing information from subsystem sensors and work orders, DaaS technology can predict vehicle problems well in advance of a fault code and recommend corrective actions before they lead to costly repairs, delays, or roadside breakdowns.

Daimler Truck North America has partnered with Uptake Fleet. Through the DaaS agreement and customer consent, Daimler will facilitate the streaming of necessary data to power Uptake Fleet. Uptake will administer the technology to help fleets optimize vehicle lifecycles and reduce repair costs using predictive vehicle maintenance.

3. Over-the-air (OTA) connectivity— OTA connectivity refers to the ability of a device or system to connect to a network or receive updates and upgrades wirelessly through the air, without requiring physical connections like wires or cables.

Geotab and Cummins are integrating to enable (OTA) connectivity for Cummins engine control units through Geotab's GO9 device. The software updates aim to provide:

  • Engine efficiency.

  • Less downtime waiting for updates.

  • Safe and secure installation.

4. Next-gen tablets — Work truck tablets have come a long way. The latest tablet, Werock Technologies Rocktab L210, has a 16-hour battery. It also has over 400% more computing power, 8 GB RAM, and twice as much working memory compared to its predecessor.

5. Virtual reality — Vizitech USA designs educational programs in fleet maintenance using virtual reality, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence. Fleet managers can have designated programs for onboarding new employees or cross-training current ones that they can continue to use again and again in a safe environment. The programs are customizable, can be used anywhere, and will save fleet managers money.
