ANAHEIM, CA – Freight Management Inc. (FMI) has introduced OptiGreen, a "green initiative" designed to help shippers reduce their carbon footprint on the environment. FMI recently was awarded a SmartWay Certification by the Environmental Protection Agency for their innovative Transportation Management Programs and Systems that contribute to reducing climate change emissions and other air pollutants. Being selected as a SmartWay participant distinguishes FMI as an industry leader dedicated to advancing environmental performance and efficiency.
The OptiGreen Program is built around Distribution Pollution Solution, FMI’s new software that can calculate carbon emissions between departure and arrival then recommend alternate shipping strategies, methods, or routes to lower those carbon emissions. By having this data, companies that want to reduce their carbon footprint on the environment can now do something proactive to achieve that goal. As an added benefit, DPS will also help companies reduce fuel costs and operate more efficiently in shipping to multiple distribution centers.
By inputting the shipment weight, mode of transport, origin, and destination zip codes on each shipment, FMI’s DPS calculator creates a report showing the amount of carbon emissions generated. The information comes from research by top industry experts and from the standards outlined in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Initiative. The OptiGreen Program then utilizes these reports to explore other models of shipping, ways to consolidate shipments moving to and from the same locations, or to explore reduction of out of region movements.
Companies who can most directly benefit from the OptiGreen Program are those with freight costs exceeding $1 million per year. However, FMI is also offering this educational tool to any companies interested in identifying ways to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
