BYD to Showcase Plug-in Hybrid at Detroit

DETROIT --- This year's Detroit auto show, which opened yesterday, Jan. 13, features a plug-in hybrid vehicle from Chinese automaker BYD. The F6DM car is scheduled to become available for sale in China this summer, BusinessWeek reported.

Skeptics, however, are wondering whether the company will be able to deliver on its promises, BusinessWeek reported. BYD has been in the car business just five years. BYD's parent company is a leading manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for cell phones and MP3 players.

The company claims its F6DM can travel 60 miles on electric power before the gasoline engine needs to kick in for recharging. The F6DM's battery can fully recharge after being plugged into an outlet for nine hours, BYD claims.
