June Diesel Trends Update

The national average price of a gallon of diesel decreased by more than 17 cents this week, and all five regions reported lower prices, ranging from just over 10 cents to more than 23 cents cheaper than a week ago.

The average price of diesel remains above $5 nationwide and in nearly every U.S. region. However, the national average price dropped by more than 17 cents at the start of this week, and one region this week reported an average price of $4.90.

The national average price of a gallon of on-highway diesel was $5.35 as reported June 1 by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

The weekly report also provides a year-over-year pricing comparison, showing the national average is now $1.89 higher than in 2025 and $1.62 higher than the same time in 2024.

This week, average prices decreased across all five regions. The regional price average decreases ranged from 10.2 cents in the West Coast region to 23.1 cents in the Midwest region. All regions’ averages are still above $5 except for the Gulf Coast region, which was reported as $4.90 on Monday.

The most expensive place to buy diesel is California, at $7.28 per gallon, and the least costly is Oklahoma, at $4.72 per gallon.

  • Midwest: $5.62
  • Gulf Coast: $5.04
  • Rocky Mountain: $5.49
  • West Coast: $6.50

Average diesel prices reported by region, as of May 18, were: 

  • East Coast: $5.42
  • Midwest: $5.75
  • Gulf Coast: $5.12
  • Rocky Mountain: $5.55
  • West Coast: $6.52

Will Fuel Prices Keep Going Down?

At the end of May, AAA reported crude oil prices had been dropping as a result of peace talks with Iran. However, the same report noted that the situation could be fragile and oil prices could spike again, thereby driving up the price of diesel and gasoline.
