From Unexpected Beginnings to Fleet Leadership
Crystal Zile never planned on a career in fleet management, but a series of unexpected turns led her to a role where she found her true calling. From professional development training to real estate around to sales to fleet, her diverse background gave her a unique perspective on leadership and adaptability.
Now, as fleet manager at Atwell LLC, Zile is focused on building a safety culture, leveraging technology, and driving continuous improvements. Whether transforming safety initiatives into driver-led programs or using data to optimize operations, her leadership is shaping the future of her fleet.
Q: What first sparked your interest in fleet management, and how did you start your career in this field?
Fleet management was never part of my original plan. My career path took me through professional development training, the police academy, real estate, and eventually a sales role with a mobile mechanic company.
That last step led me to Atwell, where I built relationships that opened the door to a fleet specialist role. Three years, a promotion to fleet manager, and countless lessons later, I couldn’t be happier. The fleet industry is where I truly belong!
Q: What’s been a defining moment or turning point in your career as a fleet manager?
One of the biggest turning points in my career was launching our Fleet Safety Incentive program. It wasn’t just about tracking data, it was about shifting mindsets. Getting drivers to buy in wasn’t easy at first, but when they started seeing the benefits (and the friendly competition kicked in), everything changed. It turned safety from a rule into a culture.
Seeing that transformation, where drivers took pride in their performance, was a game-changer for me. It proved that the right mix of technology, engagement, and a little fun can make a real impact.
Q: What do you enjoy most about working in fleet management? What keeps you motivated day-to-day?
What I enjoy most is the opportunity to make meaningful changes that improve both safety and efficiency. Every day brings a new challenge whether it’s optimizing operations, implementing new technology, or working with drivers to build a culture of safety.
The relationships with our drivers are what keep me motivated. Seeing them embrace positive changes, knowing our efforts help them get home safely to their families, and building trust along the way — that’s what makes this job so rewarding. It’s not just about managing vehicles; it’s about supporting the people behind the wheel.
Q: Can you share a lesson or piece of advice you’ve learned along the way that’s been invaluable in your fleet journey?
Change doesn’t happen overnight; it’s built on trust and communication. Whether it’s implementing new safety initiatives or introducing technology, success comes from working with drivers, not just setting policies.
Listening to their concerns, involving them in the process, and showing them the “why” behind changes make all the difference. Real progress follows when you focus on building relationships and creating a culture of safety and accountability.

I make it a priority to continuously learn, staying up to date on industry trends, technology, and best practices, not just for my own knowledge but to elevate my team.

I also encourage my team to develop their skills through training and leadership opportunities, creating an environment where we all grow together.

One of my core values is leading with transparency and accountability. I believe that trust is the foundation of a successful fleet operation, and that starts with open communication.
Whether sharing safety data, explaining the reasons behind new policies, or listening to driver feedback, I strive to create an environment where everyone feels heard and valued.

Q: What are the biggest challenges in your fleet operations, and how are you tackling them?
One of the biggest challenges is driver engagement and buy-in for safety initiatives. Change can be met with resistance, especially when it involves new technology or policies. I focus on clear communication, education, and incentives, showing drivers how telematics and data help protect them rather than just monitor them. Our Fleet Safety Incentive program has been a game-changer, turning safety into a shared goal rather than a directive.
Another ongoing challenge is cost control and fleet optimization. To manage this, we leverage telematics data to track fuel efficiency, reduce idle time, and schedule proactive maintenance, preventing costly breakdowns. Fleet management is about adaptability, using technology, communication, and teamwork to drive real results.
Q: What’s a recent win or innovative idea your fleet has implemented that you’re proud of?
Our Fleet Safety Incentive program has reduced harsh braking, speeding, and idle time — leading to lower fuel costs and fewer incidents. Drivers are actively engaged, checking their scores, and holding each other accountable in a positive way. It’s proof that when you involve drivers in the process, they become partners in fleet success rather than just participants.
Q: What’s one goal or vision you have for your fleet’s future?
A key goal is greater sustainability through fuel-efficient operations. I’m passionate about reducing our fleet’s carbon footprint while also cutting costs and improving efficiency. By optimizing fuel use and proactively maintaining our vehicles, we’re taking steps toward a more sustainable future.
Beyond Fleet: Life, Family, and Fun
Q: Outside of fleet management, what’s an accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
Raising my two daughters with my husband is my greatest accomplishment. Watching them grow into thoughtful, curious, and kind little people has been incredibly rewarding.
Q: If you could have lunch with any historical or modern figure, who would it be and why?
George Washington. His leadership during the Revolutionary War and his role in shaping the U.S. government fascinate me. I’d love to hear his thoughts on balancing power, governance, and leadership.
Q: What’s the most interesting place you’ve visited, and what made it memorable?
Washington, D.C. stands out, but I also have a deep connection to Hawaii, where I was born, and Germany, where my mother was born. Each place holds a special significance in my life.
Q: Feel free to share a fun fact about yourself!
I grew up on a military base, with my dad serving 20 years as a Marine before working another 20 as a civilian contractor. That upbringing taught me that "if you're not early, you're late!" It’s where I learned the importance of honoring your word, which shaped how I approach everything, especially in fleet management!
