White House Wants Better Truck Fuel Efficiency
WASHINGTON - President Obama has directed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to boost the fuel efficiency of medium- and heavy-duty trucks, starting with model-year 2014 vehicles.
WASHINGTON - President Obama has directed the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to boost the fuel efficiency of medium- and heavy-duty trucks, starting with model-year 2014 vehicles, according to Modern Tire Dealer.
Reducing truck greenhouse gas emissions is another part of the directive, according to a recent White House statement.
"This will bring down costs for transporting goods, serving businesses and consumers alike," said Obama. "It will reduce pollution. And, just like (fuel efficiency rules) concerning cars, this standard will spur growth in the clean energy sector."
The DOT and EPA will develop rulemaking proposals to achieve these objectives. A final rule is expected to be issued by July 2011.
In addition, the White House has called for an extension of the national program for cars and light-duty trucks to model year 2017 "and beyond."
