WEX Expands Payment Platform to Include Discounted Travel Through Engine Partnership
For commercial fleets and trucking operations, the change is designed to address a common pain point: travel expenses that fall outside traditional fuel controls.

WEX is extending its reach beyond fuel with a new preferred travel partnership aimed at simplifying how fleets handle lodging, rental cars, and airfare.
The Portland, Maine-based payments provider has named travel platform Engine as a Preferred Travel Partner, allowing WEX mobility and corporate payments customers to book and pay for travel directly through their WEX accounts. The move connects fuel and travel spend within a single payment ecosystem, giving fleets a consolidated way to manage trip-related expenses.
For commercial fleets and trucking operations, the change is designed to address a common pain point: travel expenses that fall outside traditional fuel controls. While fuel transactions are typically closely managed, hotel stays and rental cars often require drivers or technicians to use personal funds and submit receipts later for reimbursement. That process can create reconciliation delays, added paperwork, and financial strain for employees.
Bringing Travel Under the Same Controls as Fuel
By integrating Engine bookings directly into WEX’s payment platform, fleets can route travel costs through the same system used for fuel purchases. The goal is to reduce out-of-pocket spending, improve visibility into total trip costs, and streamline back-office reconciliation.
Through the partnership, WEX customers can access discounted rates on fleet-friendly hotels, rental cars, and airfare. Travel can be booked the same day with flexible cancellation options, and support is available around the clock for drivers and dispatch teams. Travel transactions are tied to WEX cards and existing spend controls, giving fleet managers greater oversight without adding new workflows.
The announcement builds on a previous collaboration between WEX and Engine focused on over-the-road trucking fuel cards. With this expanded integration, WEX is positioning its platform as a broader mobility spend solution, combining fuel and travel payments into a single system.
For small and mid-size fleets that may not have the leverage to negotiate national hotel or rental discounts on their own, the partnership could provide access to pre-negotiated rates, along with built-in payment controls.
WEX customers interested in activating the travel offering can contact their WEX representatives for more information.
