Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 2,564 Sterling Bullet 4500 and 5500 trucks in the 2008 and 2009 model years, so dealers can replace the driver’s-side frontal air bags.
The action is part of the Takata air bag inflator recall expansion, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The trucks are equipped with dual-stage driver frontal air bags with defective inflators.

If moisture seeps into an air bag inflator, it may rupture in the event of a crash that triggers air bag deployment. The resulting metal fragments could strike and injure truck occupants, NHTSA said.
There will be no charge for each truck’s replacement air bag. The recall is expected to begin Aug. 8.
The recall covers trucks manufactured from Oct. 15, 2007, to Nov. 10, 2008.
Truck owners can reach Daimler Trucks customer service at (800) 745-8000. The company’s number for this recall is FL-684.
