The City of Portland, Maine has received its first electric refuse truck, a Class 8 Mack LR Electric model, during an event in the city. The purchase of the Mack LR Electric vehicle was made to support the city's sustainability goals.
It is a significant step in electrifying the city’s vehicle fleet and will play a role in achieving the city’s goal to run on 100% clean energy by 2040. The vehicle was partially funded by a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act and the Maine Department of EPA.
Equipped with a Heil 25 cubic-yard rear loader body, the Mack LR Electric is the first electric Class 8 vehicle in Portland’s fleet. It offers 376 kWh total battery capacity for increased range and energy, with twin electric motors producing 448 continuous horsepower and 4,051 lb.-ft. of peak torque output. The vehicle features four NMC lithium-ion batteries, which are charged through a 150 kW, SAE-compliant charging system.
The Mack LR Electric model was chosen for its local dealer support and the comprehensive Mack Ultra Service Maintenance Agreement offering. The service agreement includes scheduled maintenance, preventative maintenance, towing and repair, battery monitoring, and connected uptime services tailored specifically for the needs of BEVs.
Additionally, the LR Electric and its batteries will be supported by Mack GuardDog Connect, the company's integrated telematics solution that monitors battery health and performance, checks for fault codes and defects, and helps customers achieve peak operating conditions and maximize uptime.
