The National Safety Council is observing the 30th anniversary of National Safety Month this June and has called on organizations and individuals across the country to take action against preventable injuries, a leading cause of death in the United States. Each week of June focuses on a different safety theme, including Staying Safe on the Roads.

Established in 1996, National Safety Month has grown into a nationwide movement that equips employers, workers, and communities with practical tools and resources to reduce risk. Each week in June focuses on a different safety topic, each with the same aim: to save lives, from the workplace to anyplace.

“For three decades, National Safety Month has united businesses, advocates, agencies, nonprofits and individuals around the shared goal of making workplaces, roadways and communities safer,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO. “The National Safety Council is proud to have spearheaded this effort for the past 30 years, and we look forward to continuing the vital work of raising awareness, providing resources, and spreading the value of safety, health, and wellbeing for all.”

Throughout June, NSC is spotlighting the following critical safety topics:

  • Moving Safety Forward
  • Staying Safe on the Roads
  • Promoting Holistic Worker Health
  • Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls

NSC encouraged employers, safety professionals, and individuals to sign up and receive free safety resources on its website.

Staying Safe on the Roads Materials

During the Staying Safe of the Roads focus, NSC is providing free materials, links, and videos. Those materials included topics on tactics, such as the “three-second rule” for drivers.

That rule suggests that drivers should maintain a following distance of at least three seconds in ideal conditions and longer when weather and road conditions aren’t ideal or other driving hazards are present.

NSC also provided information on distracted driving, highlighting the three types.

  • Visual, causing you to take your eyes off the road.
  • Manual, causing you to take your hands off the wheel.
  • Cognitive, causing you to take your mind off the task of driving.

The NSC materials also addressed fleet safety and recommended the need to develop a fleet safety policy.

The NSC offers resources to help fleets create a safety policy. Those are:
