General Motors has launched its inaugural GM Automotive Service Technicians 30 Under 30 program, a new initiative to recognize the next generation of automotive service technicians.

The program aims to address the severe shortage of service technicians by spotlighting the next wave of leaders shaping the future of mobility and demonstrating the promising career path offered in today’s modern service bays.

Recognizing the Next Generation of Service Leaders

The GM Automotive Service Technicians 30 Under 30 program honors GM service technicians under the age of 30 who demonstrate continuous technical training, exemplary customer service, mentorship, and leadership. Selected honorees will become ambassadors for GM, inspiring the next generation of talent by sharing their stories and bringing awareness to what a career as an automotive technician looks like today.

Selected honorees will receive:

• National recognition at an exclusive induction ceremony taking place in Detroit.
• A custom Packout toolbox and professional-grade tools, reflecting GM and Milwaukee Tool's shared commitment to skilled trades development.
• Personal artificial intelligence (AI) glasses to streamline vehicle diagnostics and enhance the customer experience.
• A personalized GM Automotive Service Technicians 30 Under 30 program service jacket.

Building a Pipeline of Future-Ready Technicians

Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly advanced, making well-trained service technicians essential to helping keep customers on the road. Yet the industry is facing a critical shortage of qualified talent.

GM said it is well positioned and committed to helping address this industry-wide challenge. The GM Automotive Service Technicians 30 Under 30 program builds on GM’s existing ecosystem of training and recognition programs, creating clear pathways into the industry, while providing continuous career development:

• General Motors Automotive Service Educational Program (GM ASEP) is a two-year, college-based training program that prepares students to become GM service technicians through classroom instruction, hands-on training, and paid dealership apprenticeships.
• Shifting Gears Automotive Technical Training Program is a specialized 12-week transition program helping U.S. Armed Forces veterans transition from military service into service technician roles prior to their separation date.
• Technician Excellence is an ongoing development and reward system program that supports dealership service technicians as they advance their skills, earn certifications, and continue growing their careers.

Nominating a Standout Service Technician for the Inaugural List

Nominations for the GM Automotive Service Technicians 30 Under 30 program are open now through Oct. 30, 2026, at 11:59 pm ET. The inaugural list will be revealed in January 2027, followed by an induction ceremony in Detroit.
