Allison Transmission Holdings, Inc. unveiled its H 3000 hybrid propulsion system for commercial vehicles at the Work Truck Show in Indianapolis on Wednesday, March 6. The company said this system is for medium- and heavy-duty trucks for refuse, utility, and shuttle fleet applications. Allison said it expects to begin production of this system later this year.

The company explained that the H 3000 captures energy when a driver hits the brakes and uses that energy to provide power for propulsion and auxiliary equipment. The system can offer fuel savings of up to 25%, according to Allison.

The fully-automatic parallel hybrid-propulsion system is based on the Allison 3000 Series transmission. The transmission features a torque converter and is connected to hybrid system components, including a motor-generator, power electronics and lithium-ion cell battery packs as part of a complete system.

Allison said the hybrid system is scalable depending on the application, and that the modular lithium-ion battery packs allow fleets to tailor the battery system’s energy capacity to work with specific vehicles or duty cycles.
