Never Stop Learning

As we age, our cognitive skills and capabilities start to decline, some more quickly than others. Continuing to learn, whether it be something specific like a new language or continuing a college education to something more job-specific can help keep you sharper, longer.

If you think you know everything, you may not get a chance to learn anything, or as Leo Buscaglia put it, “Those who think they know it all have no way of finding out they don’t”.

As we age, our cognitive skills and capabilities start to decline, some more quickly than others. Continuing to learn, whether it be something specific like a new language or continuing a college education to something more job-specific can help keep you sharper, longer.

Our past education will only take us so far. According to the Professional Academy, 42% of college graduates do not read another book after college. The reasons people stop trying to learn are numerous, with the main factors being time and money.

Not to mention, we live in a world where we have the knowledge of a million libraries in the palm of our hand. We can “google” an answer far faster than thinking it out.  Because of this, many aren’t seeing the value of continuing their education. But, continued education is crucially important to advancing in the fleet industry. From changes in technology to constantly updated regulations, there is much to stay current on.

But, how do we ensure we aren’t falling behind? A few ways to help continue your education in the fleet industry include:

  • Industry publications (you knew this would top the list).

  • Conferences and events.

  • Local chapters of NAFA or Clean Cities.

  • Company and industry Webinars.

  • College. Consider going back to college to learn a little more about an area you may not be as comfortable with. Community colleges offer classes at a much lower rate than a university for a quick refresher on something it’s been a while on, or something you never had a chance to study.

And, the benefits of continued education don’t just stop with your job. True, the more you know about your industry those closely related to it, the better chance you have at occupational longevity. But, even more interesting may be the impact it could have on your life overall. Numerous studies have shown those who continue to learn throughout their lives can be more optimistic, happier, and have stronger cognitive abilities in their senior years.
