Ford Pro's Approach to Fleet Solutions

Ford has been in the commercial vehicle space for more than 100 years. Ford Pro emphasizes an all-encompassing approach to fleet management, providing tools like reporting, telematics, and fleet management platforms to optimize operations.

“At Ford Pro, we pride ourselves on listening to and working with the customer. And what we’ve heard from our customers, they really need to keep their vehicles on the road. If they are not on the road, they are not earning money,” said Dave Prusinski, global chief revenue officer for Ford Pro. “What does that mean? It’s really uptime, which, to Ford Pro, is a group of solutions with a one-stop shop with a 360 view. And it all starts with data.

By prioritizing uptime through proactive maintenance and streamlined service processes, Ford Pro aims to keep vehicles on the road and maximize revenue for businesses.

Insights from Fleet Managers

A panel discussion  during Ford's press conference at Work Truck Week on March 6, 2024, included three fleets showcasing various vocations, fleet sizes, and vehicle makeup. Including a small all-electric fleet in Canada, a large mixed fleet, and a fleet that consists of all ICE vehicles, the panelists shared their journeys and challenges along the way.

1. Utilizing Telematics for Cost Optimization

Del Underwood, vice president of purchasing and fleet at HomeTown Services, highlighted the significance of telematics data in reducing the total cost of ownership. By monitoring idle times and implementing preventive maintenance schedules, a fleet can effectively minimize operational expenses.

2. The Role of Telematics in Electrification

Mike Hauge, fleet electrification at Ecolab discussed leveraging telematics for EVs, emphasizing its role in ensuring vehicle health and optimizing usage. Telematics provide valuable insights into mileage, battery status, and charging patterns, which are crucial for successful electrification initiatives.

Alain Fiset, director of smart energy at Fize Electrique, emphasized starting small and gradually transitioning to electric vehicles. Despite initial challenges like charging infrastructure and range limitations, early adopters can benefit from reduced maintenance costs and environmental impact.

3. Addressing Challenges and Opportunities in Electrification

The panel discussion started out noting that electrification is still the "elephant in the room."

Underwood outlined challenges such as infrastructure requirements and range limitations faced by larger fleets in transitioning to electric vehicles. Despite these obstacles, fleet managers recognize the long-term benefits of electrification and are exploring ways to integrate EVs into their operations.

Hauge discussed Ecolab's approach to electrification, focusing on data-driven decision-making and driver feedback to optimize EV usage. By understanding drivers' experiences and addressing their concerns, businesses can facilitate a smoother transition to electric vehicles.
