May Diesel Trends Update

This week, the average price of diesel fuel decreased nationally and in all five regions. The Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain regions reported the largest decreases. The national average is nearly 5 cents lower than a week ago and 27 cents below last year’s average.

After widespread price increases a week ago, the national average price of diesel decreased this week. It also decreased in every region.

According to the most recent report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the national average cost of diesel fuel decreased this week, and all five regions also reported lower average prices. 

The national average price of diesel fuel in the U.S. per gallon decreased by nearly 6 cents as of May 26, 2025. The national average price of $3.49 is 27 cents lower than it was at the same time last year.

This week, regional average prices decreased in every region. The decreases ranged from 2.5 cents in the East Coast region to more than 6 cents in the Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain regions. The averages for all regions are lower than they were at the same time last year.

The most expensive place to buy diesel is Hawaii, at $5.24 per gallon, and the least costly is Texas, at $3.05 per gallon.

In the fourth week of May, average diesel prices reported by region, as of May 26, were: 

  • East Coast: $3.55

  • Midwest: $3.43

  • Gulf Coast: $3.13

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.44

  • West Coast: $4.25

Regional Diesel Prices: 3rd Week of May

After multiple weeks of price decreases, this week the national average price of diesel increased. It also increased in every region.

Regional Diesel Prices: 2nd Week of May

This week, the average diesel price decreased nationally again. However, two regions reported slight price increases.

In the second week of May, average diesel prices reported by region, as of May 12, were: 

  • East Coast: $3.53

  • Midwest: $3.41

  • Gulf Coast: $3.14

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.46

  • West Coast: $4.21

  • East Coast: $3.58

  • Midwest: $3.45

  • Gulf Coast: $3.18

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.47

  • West Coast: $4.22
