It's September and it's time to spotlight the backbone of our economy — the hardworking truck drivers who keep our world moving. National Truck Driver Appreciation Week (NTDAW) is coming September 15-21, 2024, and it's our chance to say a big "thank you" to the 3.6 million professional truck drivers who tirelessly deliver the goods and resources that power our daily lives.

Since 1988, the American Trucking Associations (ATA) has led this nationwide celebration, reminding us of truck drivers' vital role in our communities. It's more than just a job; it's a commitment to ensuring that everything from the food on our tables to the medicines we need, and even the heavy-duty equipment on job sites, reaches its destination on time.

The same dedication and long hours on the road apply for light- and medium-duty truck drivers. These drivers are the unsung heroes of last-mile delivery, construction sites, and countless other industries.

5 Ways to Show Your Fleet Truck Driver's Appreciation

So, how can we show our appreciation? Here are a few simple but impactful ways:

  1. A Handwritten Thank You: A handwritten note can go a long way in a world dominated by digital communication. Whether you leave a quick "thank you" card in the cab or a personalized note, this small gesture can make a big impact.

  2. Driver Perks: Consider offering some perks during NTDAW. These perks could be as simple as providing a free meal, snacks for the road, or even a gift card to a favorite restaurant or store. These perks show appreciation and give a little extra comfort during long hauls.

  3. Recognition and Awards: Take the time to publicly recognize your drivers' hard work. Whether through a company newsletter, social media shoutouts, or even a small award ceremony, recognizing their efforts in front of peers and management can boost morale and show that their work does not go unnoticed.

  4. Wellness Checks: Long hours on the road can take a toll on physical and mental health. Offering wellness checks or access to resources like health consultations, massages, or fitness programs can show drivers that their well-being is a priority.

  5. Listening and Feedback: Sometimes, listening is the best way to show appreciation. Encourage drivers to share their experiences and feedback. This seemingly small effort can improve their daily operations and show their voices are valued.

Florida Trucking Association (FTA) is proud to celebrate National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, encouraging Floridians to participate in National Truck Driver Appreciation Week:

  • Thank a truck driver in person or on social media (tagging FTA and using #ThankATrucker),

  • recognize trucking companies in their area for community contributions,

  • practicing safe driving around large trucks, helping to ensure we all get home safely to our families.

And Women in Trucking is supporting the women truck drivers on the road.

"As President and CEO of the Women In Trucking Association, I have the privilege of regularly working with many of these amazing female professional truck drivers. For example, the women professionals on the WIT Image Team are so inspiring, and insightful on the joys, opportunities and challenges about life on the road. The spread their light and encouragement to other women professional truck drivers as they routinely speak with the media, at public events, and industry trade shows, and provide ride-alongs with government and industry leaders," said Jennifer Hedrick from Women in Trucking.

Let's take this Driver Appreciation Month to remind ourselves of these drivers' incredible daily work. Whether you're a fleet manager, a co-worker, or someone who benefits from the goods they deliver, a little appreciation can go a long way in ensuring our road heroes know they are valued.

So here's to our light- and medium-duty truck drivers — thank you for keeping our world turning, one mile at a time.
