National average retail diesel fuel prices were $4.97 per gallon as of Dec. 5, 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

This average price represents a decrease of 17 cents from the prior week and an increase of $1.29 over the same time last year. National average diesel fuel prices peaked to $5.81 per gallon on June 20, 2022, declined through mid August and have been on an up-and-down trajectory for the last few months of 2022.

All regions experienced a large price increase year-over-year but a small decrease from the prior week.

Current average diesel prices by region are:

  • East Coast: $5.19
  • Midwest: $4.91
  • Gulf Coast: $4.52
  • Rocky Mountain: $5.25
  • West Coast: $5.50

Recently, sister publication Heavy Duty Trucking took on the issue of rumors whether the U.S. was running out of diesel fuel. The takeaway? We aren't running out of diesel fuel in the U.S., but current lower stockpiles are resulting in elevated prices.
