Westport Innovations Inc. has gained approval from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to produce a dedicated compressed natural gas (CNG) version of Ford's 2015 Transit van.
Westport expects to receive certification from the California Air Resources Board in the spring so it can sell the vehicle in that state.

Westport will offer a dedicated CNG Transit equipped with its WiNG power system. The 2015 Transit can be acquired from Ford with a 3.7-liter gaseous prep engine. Westport is part of Ford's Qualified Vehicle Modifier (QVM) program that allows the company to sell its natural gas Transit while keeping the manufacturer's warranty intact.
Ford sold 10,030 Transit vans in December, which made it the strongest month since it was introduced in June.
