Waste Management's Use of LNG Trucks Honored by American Lung Association
SAN DIEGO – Emissions reduced from the company's San Diego-based 125 LNG-powered truck fleet are the equivalent of removing 9,200 cars from San Diego highways.
SAN DIEGO – Waste Management of San Diego was named a 2009 Clean Air Circle Honoree by the American Lung Association April 18 for its commitment to keeping San Diego's air clean and ongoing efforts to protect the environment and promote sustainability. In San Diego, the company operates the second largest fleet of liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered trash and recycling trucks in the nation. Emissions reduced from the 125 LNG-powered truck fleet are the equivalent of removing 9,200 cars from San Diego's highways.
"When our signature green trucks are seen driving down the road, the businesses and communities we serve see a brand that stands for outstanding service, proven safety results and a clear commitment to sustainability," said Carl Scherbaum, district manager of Waste Management of San Diego. "Our customers know that our trucks help to keep the air in their neighborhoods clean and that means everyone can breathe a little easier."
Waste Management's commitment to the environment goes beyond using a fleet of trucks powered by natural gas. In June, Waste Management of San Diego will open its new, state-of-the-art material sorting line at the El Cajon facility. This sorting line will process both Construction and Demolition (C&D) materials, and dry recyclables from commercial trash loads. These sorting capabilities will ensure significantly higher quantities of recyclable materials are reused and kept out of San Diego County landfills.
