Shades of Fleet Call for Voices: Family Ties

Fleet may run on vehicles and data, but for some professionals, it also runs in the family. August’s Shades of Fleet explores the pride, pressure, lessons, and legacy behind family-run operations and multi-generational fleet careers.

Work Truck is continuing its monthly video interview series, Shades of Fleet, highlighting the people who keep the fleet industry moving every day.

August’s theme, Family Ties, explores the families, relationships, and shared histories behind fleet. From parents and children working side by side to siblings, spouses, and multi-generational family businesses, these are stories where the work is more than a job and business truly is personal.

This month is about legacy, but it is also about change. How knowledge gets passed from one generation to the next. How younger family members bring new ideas into established operations. How families balance tradition with new technology, changing customer expectations, and a fleet industry that rarely stands still.

It is also about the reality of working with the people who know you best. The pride, trust, pressure, disagreements, inside jokes, and shared purpose that come with building something together. Because working with family can be incredibly rewarding, but nobody said every business meeting stays at the office.

How Do You Participate in Shades of Fleet?

Participants can record individually or alongside a family member using guided prompts and a simple recording link. No special setup is required. Can’t access the link? Email Lauren.Fletcher@bobit.com.

Family-run fleet operators, multi-generational fleet professionals, relatives working together across the fleet industry, and those preparing to carry a family business into its next chapter are invited to participate. Know a family whose fleet story deserves to be told? Send this their way.

Question prompts below to check out if it's a good fit, or use to record on phone or computer if link above doesn't work:

  1. How did your family first become connected to fleet, and how did you personally find your place in the business or industry?
  2. What is something your family member or another generation taught you that still shapes how you work today?
  3. Where do you and your family members see the business differently, and how have those different perspectives helped the operation evolve?
  4. What is the best part of working with family, and what is the hardest part that people outside the business may not fully understand?
  5. 5. Family Match-Up Round: Before hearing their answers, tell us how you think your family member would respond to each question. We’ll compare the answers and include some of our favorite matches, surprises, and friendly disagreements.
    • Who is more likely to stay calm when something goes wrong?
    • Who is more likely to push for a new idea, process, or technology?
    • Who is more likely to say, “This is how we’ve always done it”?
    • What would your family member say is your best quality at work?
    • What would they say is the one work habit you are never going to change?
