January 2024 Diesel Price Update: Back Up Again

Diesel fuel prices continued their rollercoaster ride with most regions seeing an uptick compared to the prior week.

Based on the latest report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), diesel fuel prices have increased across most regions of the U.S. heading into the middle of January.  

As of January 30, 2024, U.S. national average diesel fuel prices increased to $3.87 per gallon, still below the $4 per gallon mark on a national average but on a bit of a rollercoaster up and down in pricing in January.

Where is the Cheapest State to Buy Diesel? 

  1. Oklahoma: $3.384

  2. Colorado: $3.495

  3. Missouri: $3.463

  4. Montana: $6.509

  5. Nebraska: $3.527

This recent per-gallon pricing represents a decrease of just over 2 cents from last week and a decrease of just over 75 cents compared to last year. 

Average diesel prices as of January 30, 2024, by region, are:
















  • East Coast: $4.04

  • Midwest: $3.70

  • Gulf Coast: $3.64

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.65

  • West Coast: $4.51

U.S. Regional Diesel Fuel Prices as of January 22, 2024

All regions saw a decrease in diesel fuel prices in the U.S. as of January 22, 2024.

As of January 22, 2024, U.S. national average diesel fuel prices increased to $3.84 per gallon, still below the $4 per gallon mark on a national average but on a bit of a rollercoaster up and down in pricing in January.

This recent per-gallon pricing represents a decrease of just over 2 cents from last week and a decrease of just over 76 cents compared to last year. All regions decreased in prices compared to the previous week, but are still high above the $2.50 per gallon seen in December 2020. 

Average diesel prices as of January 22, 2024, by region, are:








  • East Coast: $3.98

  • Midwest: $3.70

  • Gulf Coast: $3.58

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.70

  • West Coast: $4.50

U.S. Regional Diesel Fuel Prices as of January 16, 2024

The Rocky Mountain region was the only area of the U.S. that saw a dip in diesel prices week-over-week.

As of January 16, 2024, U.S. national average diesel fuel prices increased to $3.86 per gallon, still below the $4 per gallon mark on a national average but creeping up again for only the second increase since late October. All regions with the exception of the Rocky Mountains experienced a minor uptick in average diesel prices.

  • East Coast: $3.99

  • Midwest: $3.73

  • Gulf Coast: $3.59

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.75

  • West Coast: $4.58

U.S. Regional Diesel Fuel Prices as of January 8, 2024

Only the West Coast region of the U.S. has an average price above $4 per gallon, but some regions of the East Coast are also seeing prices above the $4 mark.

As of January 8, 2024, U.S. national average diesel fuel prices dropped to $3.83 per gallon, continuing to slide below the $4 per gallon mark on a national average. 

This recent per-gallon pricing represents a decrease of just over 72 cents from one year ago and a decrease of just under 5 cents compared to last week. All regions dipped in prices compared to the previous week after a slight increase during the holiday break. 


Average diesel prices as of January 8, 2024, by region, are:


  • East Coast: $3.96

  • Midwest: $3.69

  • Gulf Coast: $3.53

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.80

  • West Coast: $4.57

U.S. Regional Diesel Fuel Prices as of January 1, 2024

National average diesel fuel prices dipped once again on a national and regional level compared to the previous week.

Currently, only the Midwest, Gulf Coast, and Rocky Mountain Regions of the U.S. are under the $4 per gallon mark, with both Coastal Regions rising back above that bar. 

Average diesel prices as of January 1, 2024, by region, are:

  • East Coast: $4.00

  • Midwest: $3.75

  • Gulf Coast: $3.57

  • Rocky Mountain: $3.89

  • West Coast: $4.62

What About National Gasoline Prices? 

National average U.S. gasoline prices continued to drop steadily throughout December, experiencing a similar uptick at the end of the year as diesel, but have beeon the rise once again to start out 2024. Entering the first month of 2024, gasoline prices are up across all regions except the Midwest. 

Sitting at $3.10 on a national average as of January 30, 2024, this price represents just over 3-cent increase compared to the previous week but is just over 39 cents lower than last year still.
