Ford Motor Co. on June 24 announced it is expanding an earlier recall of 2014 model-year F-150 trucks to resolve a potential problem affecting the electronic power-assist steering gears.

The F-150 truck recall, which previously involved fewer than 400 trucks, will now extend to cover 5,675 trucks globally. A total of 4,629 of the trucks are in the U.S.

The electronic power-assist steering gears might have a motor position sensor magnet that a parts supplier installed incorrectly, Ford said. The problem might lead to impaired steering or steering control loss.

The supplier on June 17 notified Ford of additional steering gears at risk for the problem, prompting the recall expansion.

Only about 260 of the recalled trucks have been delivered to customers globally. The rest are on dealership lots or en route to dealers. Owners of trucks subject to the recall should refrain from driving them and schedule the repair work immediately, Ford said. Truck owners can contact their local dealer to coordinate truck towing to the dealership location.

No accidents or injuries have been linked to the steering problem, however. 

The trucks were all manufactured from May 26 through June 19.
