Ford Motor Co. is recalling 204,448 2007-2008 model-year Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX SUVs in North American states that use road salt for snow and ice removal.
The salt exposure can lead to corrosion under the reinforcement brackets where the fuel tank is mounted to the vehicle. This corrosion may eventually allow fuel to leak, posing a fire risk. The automaker said it is aware of one fire that might be related to this condition, with no associated injuries.
The recalled vehicles were built at Oakville Assembly from June 15, 2006 to Sept. 22, 2008. An estimated 186,024 vehicles are in the U.S. and federalized territories, while 18,424 are in Canada.
The recall includes vehicles currently registered in, or originally sold in, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
Also included are the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Quebec. Dealers will inspect the fuel tank and either replace or repair it at no cost to the customer.
Commercial fleets added 6,259 Edge SUVs in 2013. Total fleet sales including government and rental reached 23,275 units.
