ALEXANDRIA, VA – The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc. (NMFTA) has published the 2007 Continental Directory of Standard Point Location Codes (SPLC). This new issue is designated NMF 102-O. The SPLC is a listing of nine-digit codes designed to uniquely identify freight origination and delivery locations.
NMFTA developed the SPLC to facilitate computerization in the transportation industry by providing each point originating freight and each point receiving freight with a code number so constructed as to identify each point with its geographic location. These codes cover locations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and are used by railroads and trucking companies to develop rates and track the movement of freight. The petroleum industry uses SPLC in the Petroleum Product Exchange System to electronically send bill of lading information to trading partners and customers.
To facilitate the movement of Department of Defense traffic, SPLCs have been assigned to all military locations as requested by the Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and Defense Logistics Agency. All carriers doing business with the DOD are required to use SPLCs when submitting rates to SDDC. Other industries and companies use SPLCs to identify geographic locations such as states, cities, and towns, and other locations where their business is conducted.
The new SPLC directory contains a large number of revisions from the previous issue, reflecting new and revised assignments to motor carrier and railroad served locations, including changes to DOD facilities as required by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission.
The new SPLC directory is available in printed form for $173.00 plus shipping, and a fixed length ASCII file is also available on CD for $820.00 plus shipping.
