Commercial fleets that used the Lytx Driver Safety Program reduced drowsy driving events by 39% and falling asleep behind the wheel by 66% from June 2018 to June, according to new data released by the video telematics solutions provider.
The data also uncovered the riskiest times for drowsy-driving incidents to occur with fleet drivers.
Noteworthy findings show that morning hours between 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. had the highest concentration of events recorded for drowsy driving, falling asleep at the wheel, and collisions. The fewest incidents happened between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.
The insights were derived from a database of more than 100 billion miles of driving data and over 1 million drivers.
Lytx has incorporated machine vision and artificial intelligence algorithms into its solutions that are constantly advancing — increasing the ability of the products to identify and alert for risky driving behaviors, according to the company.
In 2015, Lytx released its initial A.I.-powered offering for distracted driving. Today, the company has more than 200,000 devices with the technology in the market.
Drowsy driving claimed nearly 800 lives in 2017 alone, and another 50,000 people suffered injuries due to drowsy driving collisions, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. NHTSA estimates that in 2017, 91,000 police-reported crashes involved drowsy drivers.
