BOISE, ID – State legislation supported by the Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) that would provide for permanent registration for trailers and semi-trailers has been approved by the Idaho Legislature. The provisions of this permanent-plate legislation, House Bill 38, will replace current law that allows an extended registration of up to only seven years. HB 38 will also clarify that registrations for rental utility trailers can be prepaid for either one, two, three, four, or five years. Current law only allows either an annual registration or a five-year prepaid registration for rental utility trailers.
The provisions of House Bill 38, if signed into law, will result in significant savings in time and administrative costs for owners of trailers and semi-trailers. This new law could also prevent citations and the need for temporary trip permits resulting from expired trailer registrations. House Bill 38, was passed by the House of Representatives on Jan. 31, 2007, and subsequently passed by the Senate Feb. 12. The bill is now on its way to the desk of Governor C.L. Otter for his expected signature into law.
