Ford is recalling nearly 2,951 2011-2012 model-year F-Series ambulances, after determining the engines could stop unexpectedly.
The recall affects F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty ambulances produced for the 2011 and 2012 model years. The ambulances are powered by 6.7L diesel engines that deliver 300 horsepower and 660 lb.-ft. of torque.
Ford says a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor can cause the engines to stop. They can't be restarted for at least an hour, reports the Associated Press.
The ambulances are available with a regular cab, "supercab" or crew cab chassis. They include heavy-duty six-speed transmissions, and gross-vehicle weight ratings from 9,800 to 19,500 pounds.
The ambulances in the recall were manufactured Feb. 22, 2010, through Oct. 19, 2012. Ford dealers will replace the exhaust gas temperature sensor, free of charge. Vehicle owners can reach Ford at 1-866-436-7332.
