RESTON, VA - ZoomSafer, a provider of enterprise software to promote safe and legal use of cell phones while driving, announced the latest release of its FleetSafer Vision distracted driving solution.  Designed specifically for trucking fleets in which drivers typically carry personal cell phones rather than company cell phones, FleetSafer Vision includes a remarkably simple enrollment process so individual employees can easily opt-in to carrier-sponsored safety programs which both prevent texting while driving and improve compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) cell phone use regulations.

The enhanced service comes on the heels of several recent industry developments that highlight the extreme risk and expense associated with the use of a cell phone while driving a truck:

  • Sept 13, 2011 - The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) cites distraction due to mobile phone use as the cause of a truck crash that killed eleven people in Kentucky, and calls for a ban on cell phone use by commercial drivers.

  • October 31, 2011 - A UShip survey of 6,000 truck drivers finds increasing levels of mobile phone usage: 65% use texting; 54% use email; 45% web-browse; and 27% use mobile apps.

  • November 3, 2011 -- Research from AAA reveals the financial costs of traffic crashes totaled $299.5 billion in 2009, with an average cost of $6 million per fatal accident and $126,000 per injury-only crash.

"The data simply doesn't lie - employee texting and typing while driving has proven to be a major contributor to crashes, which poses a huge risk and liability to trucking firms," said ZoomSafer CEO Matt Howard.  "Beyond traditional safety programs of background checks, drug testing and motor vehicle checks, FleetSafer Vision is a simple and inexpensive risk management tool that helps encourage truckers - even those who carry personal devices - to stop texting while driving."
