Bosch has developed the active gas pedal that notifies the driver when to lighten pressure on the pedal, promotes lowered fuel consumption, and issues warnings to drivers when they are speeding.
The smart gas pedal will help drivers lessen their use of the accelerator, and the feedback they get from the pedal could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 7 percent, which reduces CO2 emissions, according to a release from Bosch.
Fuel savings and lowered CO2 emissions are possible because the pedal can be linked to other automotive functions including the transmission.
Bosch's active gas pedal can signal to drivers when it's the best time to shift gears and it can be set to give an alert as soon as coasting mode makes sense.
The pedal can also open up fuel-saving potential in gasoline-electric hybrids. It lets drivers know when the combustion engine is about to take over from the electric motor, so they can lighten the amount of pressure on the accelerator.
Additionally, the pedal can be connected with driver assistance systems and the navigation system. When connected to a collision warning system, the smart gas pedal has the potential to create vibrating signals warning drivers and deterring them from unnecessary acceleration. When the pedal is linked with the navigation system and the driver exceeds the speed limit, as a warning, the gas pedal will vibrate or exert counter-pressure.
