Lightning Systems will begin delivering a battery-electric version of Chevrolet's Low Cab Forward 6500XD later this year for commercial and government fleets, the Loveland, Colo.-based vehicle modifier announced.

The company will equip the class 6 truck with its Lightning Electric powertrain that will give the vehicle an electric range of 110 miles. The company has begun taking orders for the truck, which will continue to offer a maximum gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 25,950 pounds.

The LEV100 model, as it will be known, uses a powertrain that produces 295 horsepower and 1,821 lb.-ft. of torque in first gear that's mated to a two-speed Eaton automatic transmission. Top speed is governed at 65 mph.

Regenerative braking adds range while reducing wear and tear on the standard friction brakes. A liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery system gives the vehicle a full charge in three hours using CCS DC fast charging.

The company has received an initial order from Zeem Solutions for 50 vehicles. The New York-based Zeem Solutions is a commercial electric vehicle service provider for fleet operators. The company helps fleet managers develop a strategy to buy or lease EVs, and manage operating costs.
