Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors are teaming up to bring an all-new electric commercial van to the North American market by 2028. The van is part of a broader partnership announced by the two automakers, aimed at accelerating vehicle development and production efficiencies across the Americas.

Hyundai will lead development of the electric commercial van platform, which will be built in the U.S. and designed to support the evolving needs of commercial fleet operators. The new EV is expected to feature distinct brand identities for both OEMs, with shared architecture but unique exterior and interior design tailored to Hyundai and GM’s respective commercial customers.

GM Senior VP Shilpan Amin emphasized that the van targets one of the most important segments in the North American commercial market and represents a faster, more cost-effective approach to vehicle development.

José Muñoz, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company, added that the partnership will help deliver high-quality, tech-forward vehicles that align with customer expectations in both performance and design.

Growth in Central & South America

While the van is the sole North American-focused vehicle in this joint announcement, the broader collaboration also includes four co-developed vehicles for Central and South America, spanning compact SUVs, cars, and pickups with internal combustion and hybrid options. Together, the full lineup is expected to generate over 800,000 units in annual sales once production scales.

The two companies are also exploring joint sourcing for raw materials, logistics, and low-carbon steel as part of a shared commitment to sustainable production.

Vehicle development is already underway, with U.S. production of the electric van anticipated to begin as early as 2028.
