Insurance Institute for Highway Safety released its annual Top Safety Pick awards.

The evaluations determine whether vehicles qualify for the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ awards.

The Top Safety Pick has been recognized since the 2006 model year, while the Top Safety Pick+ was introduced in 2013.

These awards are designed to identify the safest vehicle choices within specific size categories each year.

Generally, larger, and heavier vehicles offer more protection than smaller, lighter ones.

As a result, a small car that qualifies for an award may not provide the same level of occupant protection as a larger vehicle that doesn't earn the award.
