Stephen Mackes helped the pilot and two passengers get out safely by breaking the glass and aiding them in exiting the craft.
Scren Capture: WNEP 16
While Stephen Mackes, shop foreman at Transervice Logistics’ shop in Nazareth, Pa., does not consider himself a hero, others - including the company he works for - would disagree.
Mackes was recently heading back to his motorcycle after attending a fair in Bloomsburg, Pa. when he noticed a helicopter hovering close to the ground. He knew something was wrong and yelled for people to get out of the way before the helicopter crashed onto its left side and the propeller started shredding cars.
Mackes helped the pilot and two passengers get out safely by breaking the glass and aiding them in exiting the craft. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the accident.
The FAA issued a statement on the crash: “An Enstrom F28F sightseeing helicopter crashed south of the helipad at the Bloomsburg Fair in Bloomsburg, Pa. The FAA will investigate and the NTSB will determine the probable cause of the accident.”
Mackes oversees all aspects of Transervice’s operation in Nazareth, from scheduling to parts purchasing. He oversees the work of four technicians in the location’s two-shift operation where they are responsible for keeping the transportation equipment of a major drug store chain up-and-running.
