National Insurance Day, recognized on June 28, may not come with much fanfare but for work truck and commercial fleet managers, it’s a perfect prompt to stop and take a closer look at your commercial auto insurance policies. It’s also a solid time to revisit risk management strategies and build better habits around coverage, claims, and compliance.

Whether your fleet is a small business operation with five vehicles or an enterprise fleet with 500 plus trucks, here’s how to put this overlooked day to work:

Review Your Fleet Insurance Policy (All of It!)

Fleet Insurance Day Checklist

Use this quick list on June 28 to stay ahead of risk and coverage issues:

Policy Review

  • Are all trucks and vans listed correctly?

  • Have upfits or equipment changes been updated?

  • Do your liability limits still reflect today’s costs?

  • Are your drivers and usage patterns accurate?

Cost & Risk Management

  • Request quotes or check for usage-based discounts.

  • Review your loss history and claims trends.

  • Ask about telematics-based premium savings.

Team Touchpoints

  • Run a driver safety refresher.

  • Review your accident reporting procedures.

  • Share insurance do’s and don’ts with your team.

Planning Ahead

  • Add June 28 as your annual insurance review date.

  • Request new COIs from vendors.

  • Set Q3 safety and risk-reduction goals.

Fleet operations evolve throughout the year, and your insurance policy should reflect that. If you’ve added trucks or new equipment, expanded into new service areas, started using more leased equipment, or upfitted vehicles with specialized tools, now is the time to ensure those updates are properly documented.

Take a close look at your:

  • Commercial auto liability limits. Rising costs of repairs and litigation may mean your current coverage is no longer enough.

  • Driver list and usage patterns. Confirm who’s authorized to drive what, and when. Inaccurate driver info is a common oversight.

  • Coverage for upfits or custom equipment. Many policies don’t automatically adjust for added equipment.

Not sure where to begin? Start with the basics in this hired and non-owned auto (HNOA) coverage explainer to understand how gaps may appear in the fine print.

Balance Cost and Risk Management

Premiums have been on the rise, and underwriters are tightening up. But that doesn’t mean your rates are out of your control.

This is a smart time to:

  • Shop for new quotes or talk with your broker about usage-based insurance options.

  • Ask about incentives or discounts tied to telematics use and safety programs.

  • Review your claims history and loss trends to identify problem areas.

For a longer-term view, we’ve compiled 8 tips to rewrite your risk profile, especially useful ahead of policy renewals.

Involve Your Fleet Team in the Process

Insurance isn’t just a back-office function. Use this opportunity to get your team on the same page.

  • Host a quick safety refresh, with a focus on behaviors that frequently lead to claims (backing accidents, speeding, distracted driving).

  • Reinforce your post-incident process. Fast, accurate reporting can speed up claims and reduce your downtime.

  • Share some driver-friendly insurance insights, like the truth behind common coverage myths or what actually triggers a premium increase.

Make Insurance Day a Permanent Reminder

For fleet managers juggling preventive maintenance, spec cycles, driver hiring, and DOT compliance, it’s easy to let insurance reviews fall off the radar. But building National Insurance Day into your annual planning is a simple, low-effort way to stay ahead.

Make June 28 the day you:

  • Block time for an annual policy review.

  • Request updated COIs from vendors and partners.

  • Set third-quarter goals around safety improvements and cost control.

Fleets that take a proactive approach (supported by the right data and technology) are better positioned to reduce claims, cut costs, and maintain smooth operations.
