ChargePoint, a provider of networked fleet charging solutions for electric vehicles (EVs), has announced two new security solutions to address charger vandalism: a cut-resistant charging cable and ChargePoint Protect, an alarm system designed to enhance charging station security.

Industry-First Cut-Resistant Charging Cable Deters Theft

ChargePoint has introduced the charging industry’s first cut-resistant cable, specifically designed to deter cable theft. Leveraging more than 15 years of product innovation and charger design expertise, the company aims to address widespread concerns about cable theft and vandalism, especially important to fleets look to electrify their operations.

The cut-resistant cable incorporates advanced materials that make it significantly more difficult for vandals to cut while maintaining flexibility for ease of use. ChargePoint plans to make these cables available for all its commercial and work truck fleet charging stations. Additionally, the company will selectively license the cable design to other charging station manufacturers as part of a broader effort to combat theft and vandalism.

By adopting ChargePoint’s cut-resistant cable, truck fleet charging station owners and operators can enhance reliability and reduce maintenance costs associated with tampering. The company expects the cables to be available for licensing by mid-2025.

ChargePoint Protect: Advanced Alarm System for EV Chargers

In addition to the cut-resistant cable, ChargePoint has launched ChargePoint Protect, a charger alarm system designed to further enhance security. ChargePoint Protect integrates with the charger’s existing speakers, screens, and lighting to create an effective deterrent against vandalism.

The system detects cable tampering in real time and automatically activates alarms to deter potential thieves. ChargePoint Protect can be enabled on select charging station models at no additional cost to existing fleet customers through a cloud-based software update.

Additionally, station owners can receive SMS or email alerts if the alarm is triggered, allowing for quicker responses and potential law enforcement intervention. ChargePoint expects ChargePoint Protect to be available starting this month.

Commitment to Charging Reliability and EV Adoption

“ChargePoint Protect and our cut-resistant cables demonstrate our relentless dedication to offering a dependable charging network,” said Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint. “We do not view ourselves as victims of vandalism, but rather responsible for solving it—not only for our customers but for the industry. We are sharing this technology in the most aggressive way possible to eliminate charger reliability as a hindrance to EV adoption.”

ChargePoint anticipates that these two new solutions, when combined, will benefit truck fleet and all charging station owners by reducing repair costs associated with vandalism while ensuring electric truck drivers can rely on charging stations when and where they need them.
