Automakers share stories of sales successes as they report their fourth-quarter and overall 2024 sales numbers. Find out how Ford, General Motors, Isuzu Trucks, Nissan, and Toyota performed in the recently completed year.
As U.S. automakers roll forward in 2025, most are releasing sales details for 2024. They show gains overall and in various segments. However, both Ford and General Motors say zero-emission vehicle sales, whether battery-electric or hybrid, were very strong.
Commercial and work truck fleets should keep an eye on this information as it could impact vehicle availability now and into the future.
Ford electric vehicles, including hybrids, hit a new record with a 38% increase over 2023 sales. GM said it was the No. 2 seller of EVs in the U.S. and sales in 2024 increased 50% over the prior year.
Ford Remains Strong in ICE and Hybrid Truck Sales
Ford Motor Company’s U.S. retail sales gained 17% in the fourth quarter, driving full-year 2024 retail gains of 6%, twice the rate of the estimated overall retail industry
Total Ford electrified vehicle sales (hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric) hit a record 285,291 this year – up 38%. Ford said it was No. 1 in hybrid trucks with an estimated 76% segment share and is the No. 2 U.S. electric vehicle brand.
However, the internal combustion pickups remain strong. Ford said the F-Series was America’s best-selling truck for the 48th straight year.
Ford Sales Grow 6% in 2024
Ford Motor grew retail sales 6% in 2024, double the estimated rate of the broader industry. Fourth quarter retail sales growth was even stronger at 17%, led by a 25% retail gain in the F-Series.
The Ford F-Series offers customers a choice of powertrains — gas, diesel, hybrid, and electric. These F-Series versions saw year-over-year sales growth in the final month of 2024. Ford said total F-Series fourth-quarter sales were up 21%.
Ford's total fourth-quarter sales increased 9% compared to a full-year sales gain of 4%, with a total of 2,078,832 vehicles sold.
Entering 2025, Ford bolstered its vehicle inventory to help offset the impact of expected supply reductions during plant changeovers for key product launches, including the new Expedition, Navigator, and Bronco.
Ford EVs Set New Records
With 285,291 electrified vehicles sold (HEV, PHEV, and electric), sales were up 38% in 2024 over a year ago.
Ford said its Power Promise, a program that includes a complimentary home charger with standard installation at no extra charge and access to a 24/7 Ford advisor for electric vehicle support, helped boost its electric vehicle fourth-quarter sales to a new best-ever electric vehicle sales record with 30,176 electric vehicles sold. With the success of the program, Ford is extending the Ford Power Promise complimentary home charger and standard installation into the new year to build on the momentum of record sales growth.
In 2024, each of Ford’s electric vehicles set new sales records, with F-150 Lightning sales totaling 33,510, up 39%, and E-Transit sales of 12,610, up 64%. The Mustang Mach-E also performed well in sales, with a total of 51,745, a 27% increase. Mustang Mach-E posted its best-ever quarterly sales result with 16,119 vehicles sold, making it America’s best-selling electric SUV behind only Tesla’s Model Y in 2024.
Ford Hybrid Truck Sales Surge
Hybrid powertrains increased Ford’s total electrified vehicles on record 2024 sales of 187,426 hybrid vehicles, a 40% increase over 2023.
The hybrid strength in sales came from a record surge in hybrid truck sales, with F-150 hybrid finishing the year as America’s best-selling hybrid truck on sales of 73,845 trucks, up 47%. The Maverick hybrid established a new sales record of 68,752, up 31%.
Strong SUV Sales for Ford
For the year, Ford Explorer sales totaled 194,094 SUVs making it America’s best-selling three-row SUV. Sales of Ford’s Expedition were up 6% on sales of 78,035, with the all-new Expedition ready to launch in the first quarter of 2025.
For the year, overall Ford SUV sales totaled 771,042. Bronco family totaled 233,873 for the year with a strong year-end performance and fourth quarter sales up 38% on 62,568 Broncos and Bronco Sports sold.
Ford Pro Vehicles: Super Duty & Van Sales Up
Sales of Ford’s Super Duty pickups accelerated in the fourth quarter with a 30% gain over a year ago. For the year, sales of Super Duty were up 14% compared to 2023.
Ford’s full-size vans accounted for about half of the full-size van segment in 2024, according to Ford, making it 46 consecutive years as a leader in the commercial van segment.
As America’s No. 1-selling van, Ford Transit sales totaled 152,738 vans in 2024, an 18% improvement over 2023. Fourth-quarter Transit sales were up 24% on sales of 38,457 vans.
General Motors Posts 4% Sales Growth in 2024
General Motors had a strong 2024, growing U.S. sales and market share with a redesigned portfolio of both electric and gas-powered vehicles. For the year, GM expanded overall sales by 4% to 2.7 million vehicles, the highest total since 2019.
GM estimates its 2024 market share at 16.5%. All GM brands – Chevrolet, GMC, Buick, and Cadillac – posted strong sales gains.
For the fourth quarter, sales were up 21% from the prior-year period. Electric vehicle sales jumped 50% for the year and 125% for the quarter. GM said it was the No. 2 seller of EVs in the U.S. across the second half of 2024.
GM said it also was the leading seller of full-sized pickups for the fifth straight year – with the highest annual sales since 2007. Plus, it reported it was the top seller of full-size sport utility vehicles for a 50th straight year.
“It was a great year for us across our product lines,” said Rory Harvey, GM executive vice president and president of global markets. “How did we do it? By investing to have the best portfolio in the industry. We have something for everyone, no matter what they like to drive."
Chevrolet sales were up 1.5%, to the highest level since 2019. Equinox EV was a major driver, with unit sales in the fourth quarter up 85% from the third quarter.
Meanwhile, GMC had its best year ever in 2024 with total sales up 9%, aided by a 33% spike in fourth-quarter sales. Sierra and Canyon both had their best years in history. It was a record year for the Denali sub-brand, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
Nissan U.S. Sales Increased 2.8% in 2024
Nissan Group announced a total U.S. fourth quarter for 2024 of 222,484 units, an increase of 10.3% versus the prior year. Nissan said the increase is due to strong sales of its models across the lineup, including the all-new Kicks, Versa, and Pathfinder.
Nissan Group also announced total calendar year 2024 U.S. sales of 924,008 units, an increase of 2.8% compared to the prior year.
In pickup sales, Nissan Frontier sales were up 13.5% year-over-year for the fourth quarter. Sales of Frontier were up 17.2% for the calendar year.
Sales of the Pathfinder SUV were up 12.8% for the calendar year and 44.2% year-over-year in the fourth quarter.

EVs 43% of Toyota & Lexus Vehicles Sold in 2024
Year-end electrified Toyota and Lexus sales surpassed one million units and surged 53% with electrified vehicles making up more than 43% of total sales volume. The two brands now have 30 electrified vehicle options available, which Toyota said is the most among any automaker.
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported year-end 2024 U.S. sales of 2,332,623 vehicles, an increase of 3.7% on a volume basis and an increase of 3.1% on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis compared to 2023.
The company reported that in the fourth quarter of 2024, U.S. sales of 603,104 vehicles decreased by 2.7% on a volume basis compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.
“Our multi-pathway powertrain approach continues to attract customers, meeting their lifestyles and budgets,” said Jack Hollis, executive vice president and chief operating officer, TMNA. “Our teams are working with suppliers and dealers to prepare for a busy 2025 as we introduce approximately 24 all-new, refreshed or special edition Toyota and Lexus vehicles, and start battery production at our new $13.9 billion North Carolina facility to meet future demands of our customers.”
Toyota Trucks & SUVs
Toyota reported its Tacoma is the No. 1 small pickup in America for the 20th consecutive year and the RAV4 is the best-selling SUV in the U.S. for the 8th consecutive year.

Toyota Certified Used Vehicle program remains the top-seller of certified used vehicles for the 16th consecutive year and has sold its 8 millionth vehicle since launching in 1996.
Isuzu Sets Retail Truck Sales Record In 2024
Isuzu Commercial Truck of America reported setting a new Isuzu retail truck sales record. In 2024, Isuzu dealers sold more low cab-forward trucks and surpassed the previous record set in 2023.
“Isuzu dealers really made the retail sales record possible. From defining our customer experience to bringing new customers into the Isuzu brand, they do a really great job at all levels,” said Shaun Skinner, president, Isuzu Commercial Truck of America.
Plus, 2024 was a milestone year as the company celebrated 40 years of Isuzu trucks in the U.S. and launched its first electric vehicle.
“For 2025, there’s a lot to be excited about, and we are in a great position for continued success. Our Class 3 to 5 product line in the N-Series gives customers a robust choice of powertrains and wheelbases that makes nearly everything possible with Isuzu. When you think about Class 6 and 7, our F-Series trucks have been very popular and opportunities there continue to grow,” Skinner added. “Even with some regulatory uncertainty, Isuzu is in a great position to serve the vast needs of the medium-duty market.”
N-Series sales grew by about 6% in 2024, compared to 2023. Overall sales increased by slightly more than 4% over the prior year.
