If you operate a delivery fleet or operate in the last-mile sector, your operations are booming, and technology is advancing. While bigger trucks are great for getting bulk items across long distances, the more compact urban neighborhood was not meant for even the smallest medium-duty delivery trucks. 

While we have talked about “mixed fleets” for years, that often just covers a mix of cars, trucks, and some larger equipment. The mixed delivery fleet of the future goes way beyond what’s on a chassis.

Autonomous Technology & Robots

Autonomous tech has been gaining steam, especially as it relates to last-mile. The smaller delivery type robots and transporters are benefiting last-mile fleets looking to deliver goods and food anywhere in a busy, crowded neighborhood, safely and with limited to no human interaction in some cases.

Drones in Last-Mile

In late 2020, Fortune Business Insights released a report that noted the global drone package delivery market size is projected to reach $7,388.2 million USD by 2027, exhibiting a CAGR of 41.8% during the forecast period. Widespread deployment of drones to deliver medical and food supplies amid the COVID-19 pandemic is expected to aid the market make substantial gains. 

Continued news momentum in January 2022 in Forbes magazine noted that for the first time in medical history, an autonomous drone helped save the life of a man who experienced cardiac arrest via the delivery of an Automated External Defibrillator. 

While most drone testing is being done by larger delivery fleets, their testing will lead the way toward more widespread use.
