ILSAC GF-7 is the next generation of gasoline engine oil standards developed by the American Petroleum Institute (API) in collaboration with industry stakeholders. Since its first license on March 31, 2025, API has licensed over 1,800 GF-7 specification motor oil products.
This includes more than 1,750 under GF-7A and an additional 125 under GF-7B, which is for the SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade. The API Service Category SQ has more than 2,500 licensed products. API continues to accept licensing applications for all categories.
The ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B categories differentiate between performance levels or oil grades for specific engine needs.
Licensed oils that meet the GF-7A standard may be used where oils meeting GF-6A or earlier gasoline engine oil standards have been recommended. Oils that meet the ILSAC GF-7B standard may be used where oils that meet the GF-6B standards for SAE 0W-16 oils have been recommended.
API Service Category SQ Grades
API Service Category SQ includes ultra-low-viscosity grades, such as SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12.
These grades are becoming increasingly important as they can offer lower friction and better fuel economy in vehicles where these viscosity grades are being recommended by global automakers API Service Category SQ now makes it easier for these automakers to recommend API-licensed oils, especially in North America.
API Motor Oil Guide
The API Motor Oil Guide has been updated following the first licensing of ILSAC GF-7 motor oils. Designed for consumers, technicians, and other industry professionals, the guide remains a trusted resource for selecting motor oils that meet the manufacturers’ and industry's specifications.
