Nissan is reinventing rear-view mirrors with its Smart Rearview Mirror — an LCD monitor that integrates a backup camera that the automaker will show on a 2014 Rogue at the New York International Auto Show.

The Smart Rearview Mirror allows a driver to switch between the LCT monitor and a traditional rear-view mirror. When in LCD mode, the mirror operates as a monitor to display images from a high-resolution camera allowing the driver to gain a clear view of the rear of the vehicle.

The mirror uses a high-performance, narrow-angle camera producing 1.3 million pixel images and a specially shaped LCT monitor with an aspect ratio of 4:1 compared to traditional aspect ratios of 4:3 or 16:9.

Nissan plans to introduce the mirror to global markets in the next few years after an initial rollout to Japanese customers before summer.
