January Diesel Trends Update
Average diesel prices increased again this week, both nationally and across every region. The national average price increased by more than 9 cents.

Although diesel prices started 2026 lower than a year ago, the downward price trend has reversed. This week, prices increased nationally and in every region. The national average price of a gallon of on-highway diesel was $3.62 as reported Jan. 27.
Yet, that is still 3.5 cents cheaper than a year ago.
According to the most recent report by the U.S. Energy Administration (EIA), the national average cost of diesel fuel at the start of this week increased by more than 9 cents.
This week, regional average prices increased in all five regions. The regional price average increases ranged from just over 4 cents in the East Coast region to more than 13 cents in the Midwest region.
Three of the five regions averaged lower prices than in the same period last year. The East Coast region had the most significant difference, 11.1 cents lower than this time last year.
The most expensive place to buy diesel is Hawaii, at $5.23 per gallon, and the least costly is Oklahoma, at $3.00 per gallon.

After several weeks of declining prices for diesel, the average price of a gallon of diesel increased nationally by more than 7 cents and by varying amounts across all five regions.

Regional Diesel Prices: Second Week of January

Average diesel prices continued to decline this week, both nationally and across all regions. The national average price is now more than 14 cents lower than a year ago.
