FCCC to Develop New Chassis for RV Industry

While known in the fleet world for building chassis for walk-in vans, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. is expanding its footprint in the RV industry with a collaboration with Roush on a new gas Class A motorhome that will be powered by GM’s new GM 6.6-liter gas engine.

While Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. (FCCC), a part of the Daimler Truck Specialty Vehicles (DTSV) division of Daimler Truck North America, may be known in fleet circles as a chassis builder for walk-in vans and Thomas Built Buses, it also has a large share of the motorized RV market. And FCCC will be growing that presence.

While most diesel Class A motorhomes are built on a Freightliner chassis, that has not been the case for Class A gas motorhomes, which have been largely built on the Ford F-53 chassis, which is sunsetting.

Now, three commercial vehicle companies are combining talents to take on the new challenge.

FCCC is now expanding its work with Roush to bring a next-generation, gas-powered Class A chassis to the RV market. Through the new agreement, FCCC will work with Roush Power Systems, a recently formed division of Roush, to integrate the new GM 6.6-liter gas engine into a new front-engine Class A chassis expected to start production in January 2028.

The collaboration is expected to provide OEMs a platform offering enhanced handling, ride quality, and coach amenities that FCCC customers have come to know and expect.

“This partnership brings together two of the most respected and recognized names in commercial transportation, combining decades of innovation, expertise, and industry leadership,” said Akbar Ghous, vice president of sales and marketing for FCCC. “We bring an unparalleled legacy and industry leadership to this segment, as well as a unique understanding of our OEM partners and RV customers. From engineering and purpose-built manufacturing to the most comprehensive service network, we are excited to bring an enhanced experience to the Class A gas market.”

Designed and built specifically for the RV market, the new gas Class A product will be the latest in a long line of RV-specific innovations in FCCC’s growing list of custom-built, industry-leading chassis. Exclusive features and innovations FCCC has introduced include the state-of-the-art DriveTech digital display; the V-Series Suspension System; the precision-tuned UltraSteer tag axle; and BrakeSync air system.

As with all coaches built on FCCC chassis, owners of the new gas-powered Class A products will have access to the industry’s largest service network, composed of more than 450 Freightliner-branded service locations throughout North America, including more than 100 Oasis Network dealerships. All locations are equipped to handle Class A coaches with ease. Oasis service technicians are specially trained to work on FCCC chassis and positioned to receive parts quickly through the FCCC nationwide parts distribution system.

Additional ownership features with the new Class A gas products from FCCC will include a comprehensive warranty, 24/7 factory-direct support, and an official customer-support mobile app.
