Chevron Products Company, a Chevron U.S.A. Inc. division, maker of the Delo brand of technologically advanced engine oils, lubricants, and coolants, released a case study demonstrating the performance of Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 and Delo Extended Life Coolant in a CAT C-15 engine used by New Holland, Pa.-based Sindall Transport. The two products played a key role in the CAT engine reaching 1.1 million miles with minimal wear.

Don M. Sindall founded Sindall Companies in the 1950s, hauling hay and balers between the sale barns of New Holland, PA, and Ontario, Canada. Now under the leadership of Don’s son Doug, Sindall Transport has used Chevron Delo lubricants and coolants for its fleet for over 16 years.

Nearly a fifth of the engines in the company’s fleet have more than a million miles of service. “They stay on the road in top condition thanks to Delo,” said Doug Sindall. “We have 29 trucks, many with 1 million miles plus without an overhaul,” Sindall said.

In order to demonstrate, Sindall mechanics disassembled one of the company’s oldest CAT C-15 engines to see how it was holding up after 1.1 million miles on the road using Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 and Delo Extended Life Coolant. Mechanics found the engine in “incredible” condition, said Sindall Master Mechanic Harry Kline.

After removing the cylinder head and valves, the team found that the engine had only minor carbon deposits inside the cylinders and on the valves themselves.“The cam shaft – there was no sign of wear,” Kline said. “We’re going to reinstall it back in the engine.”

Sindall Fleet Manager Dave Troop said that the condition of the engine Kline’s team inspected is seen across the board in all the company’s trucks, including five other vehicles each with more than a million miles on their engines. “I’ve got five or six trucks with over a million miles on them, and with the Delo products in them, I certainly hope we can try to get 2 million miles out of them,” Troop said. “I’m pretty confident that we can get close to that.”

The success with Delo engine oil has led Sindall Transportation to switch to Delo’s full line of engine products, including Delo gear lubricant and Delo Extended Life Coolant. Sindall Transportation has used Delo Extended Life Coolant since 2003 and has seen it help put a stop to liner pitting and cavitation, with engine liners staying clean and in good condition with no deposits.

In summing up his experience with Chevron Delo products, Sindal said “We use Delo 400 oil, because it extends the lives of our engines.”
