Bonita Springs Utilities (BSU) in Florida is expanding its alternative fuel program with the addition of new compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles to its 68-unit fleet and the expansion of its existing CNG fueling station.
BSU plans to add four additional CNG units, growing its total CNG vehicle count to 10, according to BSU.
In 2012, the utility started a pilot program by installing a CNG fueling station and converting four high-usage trucks. The program resulted in significant reductions in fuel and maintenance costs and emissions into the environment, which has encouraged the utility to boost its alternative fuel efforts even more.
The decision to expand the CNG fueling station will allow BSU to accommodate up to 35 CNG vehicles. The existing fueling station will be at its capacity with the four new units, according to the BSU website.
“BSU has 68 vehicles servicing our 60-square-mile area. By choosing CNG vehicles instead of traditional gasoline-powered trucks, we have the potential to generate long-term cost savings and reduce our emissions of particulate matter and carbon dioxide,” said Andy Koebel, director of operations.
