Automakers Share 3rd Quarter Truck Sale Increases

Ford, General Motors, Nissan, and Toyota shared their recent sales updates and pickup trucks are proving a still popular option, especially for fleets.

According to the most recent data from Bobit, 2023 calendar year-to-date truck and SUV sales to fleets is up 42.6% compared with data from 2022.

Ford F-Series Remains No. 1 Selling Truck in America

Q3 Ford Maverick sales totaled 23,931 trucks, an increase of 83.4% over last year.

Ford posted gains across its gas, electric, and hybrid vehicle lines in the third quarter of 2023. According to the automaker, the Ford F-Series expanded its lead as America’s No. 1 selling truck, followed by record electric and hybrid vehicle sales and strong commercial Transit van sales. 

Ford hybrid sales, led by F-150 and Maverick hybrid trucks, posted Q3 sales of 34,861 vehicles – up 41.4% over last year. F-150 Hybrid sales expanded 46.9% on sales of 12,311 trucks. Maverick Hybrid now represents 56.5% of all Maverick trucks sold. Q3 Maverick sales totaled 23,931 trucks, an increase of 83.4% over last year. 

In addition, Ford’s Transit van sales climbed 28.3% on sales of 34,006 vans. Transit continues as America’s No. 1 selling commercial van in Q3 and year-to-date, with 98,052 vans sold – up 43.5% from a year ago. Ford E-Series vans increased 13.4% in Q3 and are up 37.3% this year. 

Based on July’s most recent registration data, Ford was No. 1 in commercial sales. Ford’s U.S. Class 1-7 commercial truck and van share grew to 40.5%, up 2.1 percentage points from a year ago.

General Motors Truck Sales Drive Third Quarter Gains

According to GM, GMC Sierra sales are up 46% year-to-date.

General Motors Co. and its dealers delivered 674,336 vehicles in the U.S. in the third quarter of 2023, up 21% year-over-year.

Strong customer demand for GM’s portfolio of trucks and SUVs drove sales growth across all its brands in the third quarter. GM’s total sales are up 19% for the calendar year.

Specific to pickup trucks, Chevrolet Colorado sales were up 28%, with the GMC Sierra up 46% year-to-date. 

Overall, fleet year-to-date truck sales are up 15%, with the Chevrolet Silverado MD experiencing its best-ever quarter and year-to-date sales. 

Toyota Motor North America Pickup Sales Up Year-Over-Year

Contributing to the Tundra’s sales boost, the Toyota Tundra HEV experienced its best-ever year-to-date and September sales, according to the automaker.

Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. September 2023 sales of 203,904 vehicles, up 13.9% on a volume basis and up 9.5% on a daily selling rate (DSR) basis versus September 2022.

Digging into truck sales, overall truck sales for Toyota Motor North America in September 2023 were 31,840 units, down 2.1% from September 2022. But calendar year-to-date sales for the pickup truck division are up by just under 22,000 units. 

The Toyota Tacoma experienced a 7.8% sales decline, while the Toyota Tundra was up 10.3%. 

Contributing to the Tundra’s sales boost, the Toyota Tundra HEV experienced its best-ever year-to-date and September sales, according to the automaker.

Nissan Titan Boosts Overal Truck Sales

The Nissan Group has reported strong third-quarter sales for its Nissan division, with a 40.2% increase over last year’s figures. 

While Nissan Frontier sales were down 10.9% year-over-year, overall Nissan truck sales saw an increase of 34.5%. This overall increase was primarily due to the performance of the Nissan Titan, which saw a 280.9% increase in sales year-over-year for the quarter, totaling 4,857 units.

The Nissan Rogue SUV also proved to be a popular choice, with 63,346 units sold, representing a 49.2% increase year-over-year for the quarter.
