Toyota Alabama is marking its 25th anniversary, highlighting the Huntsville plant's role in producing engines and differentials for the Toyota Tundra and Tacoma as the facility celebrates a quarter century of manufacturing growth.
The facility opened in 2001 with a single engine line dedicated to the Toyota Tundra. Since then, it has expanded into a $1.7 billion manufacturing operation that produces nearly 1 million engines and 500,000 differentials annually while employing approximately 2,400 team members.
"Toyota Alabama's decades of growth and success are a testament to our 2,400 committed team members," said Marc Perry, president of Toyota Alabama. "Their dedication, skill and passion make Toyota a leader in quality and innovation. We are proud of every team member who contributes to this legacy."
Tundra and Tacoma Remain Central to Toyota Alabama's Manufacturing Legacy
What began as a single-engine line supporting the Tundra has evolved into a critical part of Toyota's North American truck production network. Today, Toyota Alabama assembles engines and differentials for the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Tacoma and produces powertrain components for the Toyota Sequoia SUV.
The Huntsville facility expanded its capabilities in 2025 through a $282 million investment that added assembly of three differential products. The plant now produces nearly half of Toyota's engines assembled annually in North America.
To date, Toyota Alabama has produced more than 11 million engines.
"What began as a historic investment in North Alabama 25 years ago has grown into a world-class manufacturing operation that drives Alabama's economy and puts our state on the map for automotive innovation," Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey said. "I congratulate Toyota Alabama and the thousands of hardworking employees whose dedication has fueled its success and made this milestone possible."
Beyond Manufacturing
Along with celebrating its production milestone, Toyota Alabama announced $125,000 in donations to five local nonprofit organizations through Toyota's Driving Possibilities STEM education initiative.
Recipients include Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tennessee Valley, Free 2 Teach, The Enrichment Center, The Schools Foundation, and Huntsville Hospital Foundation.
Over the past 25 years, Toyota has contributed more than $24 million to local nonprofit and community organizations, including nearly $11 million invested in Huntsville City Schools through the Toyota USA Foundation's Driving Possibilities program.
"Toyota's investment in Huntsville was a defining moment for our community," said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. "As one of the first global manufacturers to establish a major presence here, Toyota helped demonstrate that Huntsville could compete on the world stage for advanced manufacturing and innovation. Today, Toyota Alabama stands as a cornerstone of our economy, providing high-quality jobs, producing world-class products, and giving back generously to the community."
