Pickup trucks have come a long way since their early days as work vehicles. Today, they are still a top choice for work truck drivers who need vehicles that can haul heavy loads and withstand rugged terrain. While modern-day pickup trucks have evolved to become functional family vehicles, the work truck appeal remains. With the availability of hybrid and electric options, drivers can now opt for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

From compact to full-size, the range of available options continues to grow, making pickup trucks the go-to choice for anyone needing a versatile and capable work truck.

However, pickup trucks are more prevalent in some states than others, accounting for an average of 16.5% of all vehicles on the road.

According to a ranking of states by their share of light-duty pickup trucks from iseecars.com, Wyoming has the highest share, with 37.1%. This is 2.2 more pickup trucks than the national average. Wyoming, also known as “the Cowboy State,” is a Western Rocky Mountain state with unpaved roads, rugged terrain, and harsh winters, all requiring off-road and foul-weather capability.

Some key takeaways?

  • Texas, which also leads the nation in pickup truck sales volume, ranks 19th for the state’s total vehicle share.

  • Northern and mountainous states are the top 10 states with the highest share of pickup trucks.

  • On the other hand, New Jersey has the lowest share of pickup trucks at 7.9%, more than half the national average.

  • Except for Illinois, the 10 states with the lowest shares of pickup trucks are all coastal.
