Smart Grid Expected to Cut Down on Fleet Use
Over the past year and a half, the Chattanooga Electric Power Board, Tenn., has worked to modernize its grid and improve efficiency with automation. With these upgrades, the electric utility will be able to restore power more quickly without needing to send out workers to search for the source of power outages.

One utility's smart grid upgrade will lower the demand for fleet in the future. Chattanooga Electric Power Board (Tenn.) has spent the past year and a half modernizing its grid to improve efficiency with automation.
With these upgrades, the electric utility will be able to restore power more quickly and restrict the scope of outages without needing to send out workers to search for the source of power outages, reports the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.
This automation will significantly cut down on fleet use, which will also reduce the electric utility's carbon footprint. The Electric Power Board expects to avoid driving 419,877 miles annually, equivalent to about 3.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide.
