Nearly 400 people will die in traffic accidents during the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend, according to the National Safety Council.
The council estimates 382 traffic fatalities between 6 p.m. Friday, May 23, and 11:59 p.m. Monday, May 26. Another 40,900 people will receive injuries that require medical treatment, the council reported.
"Memorial Day marks the beginning of summer celebrations, but sadly, we know this long holiday weekend will end with too many preventable deaths and injuries," said Deborah Hersman, the council's president and chief executive.
Another 139 lives will be saved because people used seatbelts, which are about 45 percent effective in a crash.
